Statement delivered by OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish at the Official Launch of the OFID-ICTP Postgraduate Fellowship Program at ICTP Headquarters in Trieste, Italy, June 8, 2016.

Dear Professor Quevedo, ladies and gentleman, distinguished guests,

It is a great honor to be here today among you for the official launch of the OFID-ICTP Fellowship Programme. During my previous and first visit to the ICTP HQ in October 2014, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the ICTP, I had the pleasure to meet Professor Quevedo and to know more about ICTP’s noble mission and activities.

I take this opportunity to express OFID’s appreciation for ICTP’s valuable contribution to the advancement of scientific expertise in the developing world, in particular in the areas of physics and mathematics. We are proud to know that ICTP has been able to do that thanks in part to a fruitful partnership with OFID which dates back to 1980.

I would like to stress here that promoting access to quality education and knowledge are also very much embedded in OFID’s vision of “sustainable development centred on human capacity building.” Our support to the Postgraduate Fellowship Program is in line with this vision and our mission to “foster South-South partnerships with the aim of eradicating poverty.”

As OFID is celebrating its 40th anniversary, enhancing access to quality education, from primary school to university, will remain among our main priorities, especially since it has been recognized as an important goal in the post-2015 sustainable development agenda (SDG 4: "Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promoting lifelong learning”).

At OFID, we do have a particular interest in strengthening the capacity of our partner countries to address their energy poverty, food security and water related challenges. While we do that through investments in human resources as well as infrastructure development, we share the belief of late Nelson Mandela that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

To conclude, I would like to reiterate OFID’s support to ICTP’s noble mission. I also wish ICTP success in the implementation of this Program which I hope will allow all the beneficiaries to make a meaningful contribution to the development of their respective countries. Thank you.
