Malala to receive the OFID Annual Award for Development

On February 14, 2013 HE Khurshid Anwar, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Austria paid a courtesy visit to OFID. He was welcomed by Director-General, Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish and informed that a Pakistani national, Malala Yousafzai, has been selected to receive the OFID Annual Award for Development for 2013.

Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year old activist for education and women’s rights, is the youngest nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in history. In 2012 she was shot by Taliban gunmen for speaking out in favor of young women’s right to education, but has since been recovering from her injuries. She has received numerous awards including Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize, the Simone de Beauvoir Prize and Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2012. Ms. Yousafzai and her parents will shortly be notified by OFID regarding the presentation of the award.

The OFID Annual Award which comes with a US $100,000 prize will be presented to Ms. Yousafzai, or her representative, by the Chairman of OFID’s Ministerial Council at its meeting in Doha, Qatar on June 13th of this year
