OFID offers US$350,000 to support the 16th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2006) in Toronto, Canada

63/2006 June 13, 2006, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Press inquiries:

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) today approved a grant of US$350,000 to the International Aids Society (IAS) in support of its biannual global meeting scheduled for Toronto, Canada from August 13-18, 2006.

With its theme “Time to deliver” AIDS 2006 will be an important global gathering in the fight against the spread of AIDS, as well as a unique opportunity for science, international community, government and leadership from around the world to advance collective response to the epidemic.

OFID had participated in the previous international AIDS Conference, held in Bangkok, in 2004. The Fund has again been invited to take an active role in AIDS 2006 and make its important work in HIV/AIDS visible among the high level international development institutions.

In considering this invitation, the Management envisages a great potential for OFID to maintain its presence in this field. The extended grant will assist in the participation of candidates from poorer countries at the Conference.
