OFID extends relief assistance to China earthquake survivors

14/2008 May 20, Vienna Austria
Press inquiries:

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) yesterday approved a US$1 million grant in emergency aid to China to assist with global efforts at rescuing victims of the recent earthquake in the country. The massive quake which measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale, struck the south-western province of Sichuan. It was reported to have been the worst to hit China in 30 years.

Thousands of people have been reported killed, injured or missing. Indeed, it is feared that the death toll might rise significantly. Furthermore, about four million homes were reported to have been destroyed or badly damaged in Sichuan and seven other affected provinces and municipalities. These include Gasu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou and Hubei.

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has launched a nation-wide fundraising campaign, and has raised some US$17 million to date. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) also launched an international appeal to complement efforts within the country. Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Vietnam and Poland are among countries which have already provided humanitarian support.

The one million dollar aid, as approved by the Chairman of OFID’s Governing Board, HE Mr. Jamal Nasser Lootah, will help provide essential relief supplies for the benefit of victims in Sichuan province. The funds will be channeled through the IFRC. According to Director-General, Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish, OFID’s contribution is a gesture of sympathy with the affected population.
