Taoussa Dam (US$8 million)
Purpose
To provide a reliable supply of irrigation and drinking water to the one million-strong population in the project region originating in Gao and Timbuktu to the frontier bordering Niger.
Activities
  • construction of a dam and 1,460 m2 reservoir, including all related facilities;
  • construction of a 130 km paved access road linking the dam site to Gao via the city of Bourem;
  • carrying out of hydroelectric development works on approximately 3,500 ha;
  • carrying out of environmental and social mitigation measures;
  • project implementation unit and provision of technical support; and
  • consultancy services.

Purpose
To carry out agricultural development activities in three pastoral zones in northwest Mali
Activities
  • construction of 15 wells and six tube-wells with solar-powered pumps;
  • building of seven vaccination parks and three cattle markets;
  • procurement of vehicles and agricultural and office equipment;
  • provision of training to the local population in areas such as literacy, maintenance of the infrastructure and environmental protection; and
  • project implementation unit support.
