Energy Development and Access Program (US$8 million)
Purpose:
This project aims at providing underserved areas with an affordable, reliable source of electricity.
Activities:
  • implementation of a pilot scheme in the capital Maputo to test a lower voltage network for potential use in other areas;
  • rehabilitation of the primary distribution network network;
  • upgrading of substations in Matola and Chimoi;
  • extension of the distribution network in peri-urban sites at Matola, Nampula, Chimoi,Tete and Pemba;
  • installation of customer connections;
  • implementation and/or scaling up of small- and medium sized investments in renewable energy sources; and
  • carrying out of institution-strengthening and capacity-building measures.

Save Valley Irrigation Development (US$7.96 million)
Purpose:
To construct irrigation schemes in the towns of Chimunda and Paunda in Inhambane Province in the south.
Activities:
  • construction of three irrigation schemes, each of which will cover 1,000 ha;
  • procurement of equipment such as electric pumps and generators, as well as maintenance equipment and agricultural machinery;
  • construction of pumping stations, access roads and bridges;
  • establishment of a rural credit scheme;
  • consultancy services.

Eduardo Mondlane University (Additional Loan) (US$4.4 million)
Purpose:
To help cover cost overruns owing to an escalation in the price of construction materials in the Southern Africa region.
Activities:
  • construction of a facility to house the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and two others for the Biology Department;
  • construction of a 3,600 m 2 administrative building;
  • procurement of furniture and equipment; and
  • consultancy services.

Purpose:
To help cover a funding gap for an OFID-co-financed project that was approved in 2004.
Activities:
  • rehabilitation of 34 km of internal roads in the Maputo city center; and
  • consultancy services.

Matola General Hospital (US$5 million)
Purpose:
To construct a 200-bed hospital in Matola Province

  • consultancy services.
