450,000 This will support poverty-reduction efforts being carried out by the Austrian Red Cross, which has been working in cooperation with the Nepalese Red Cross Society. The initiative will help reduce poverty in some of the poorest areas in the country by carrying out community development programs aimed at improving water supply and sanitation, boost literacy and provide income-generation opportunities, among other goals. The present scheme will conduct similar activities in nine villages in the Rukum District in Nepal. 17.12.2009
500,000 This grant will support an ongoing Guinea Worm Disease eradication program in six endemic countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and the Sudan. The current program, which is in its final phase, aims at achieving full eradication by the end of 2012. Current activities will involve the development and maintenance of surveillance, reporting and response capacity of national agencies in endemic countries through the provision of technical and financial assistance and conducting of capacity-building activities. 17.12.2009
500,000 This grant was extended to support a project developed by the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research that aims at helping improve socio-economic conditions of women in six Arab countries; namely, Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania, Jordan, the Sudan and Yemen. This will be achieved by carrying out capacity-building among NGOs and governmental institutions that target the needs of disadvantaged women. It will also seek to empower rural women by facilitating their access to information relating to their rights and services available to them. 17.12.2009
1 million To co-finance an initiative of the UNHCR, which is carrying out reintegration assistance activities to insure the safe return of Mauritanian refugees from Senegal and Mali. UNHCR plans on providing returnees with the support services needed to facilitate their reintegration; insuring that they receive access to basic social services; and developing projects aimed at assisting communities that will be accommodating the returnees. The total number of beneficiaries is estimated at 28,000 people. 09.10.2009
800,000 To sponsor a program of the International Committee of the Red Cross Special Fund for the Disabled (ICRC/SFD). This will support operations in 15 SFD collaborative national centers in Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Somalia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe), as well as the SFD regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This will help boost the capacity of the participating centers so that they can provide high-quality physical rehabilitation services, benefitting over 3,000 disabled individuals. 09.10.2009
600,000 To co-finance the upgrading of radiology equipment at the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) in Jordan. The KHCF, which is the only specialized center in the Middle East, is equipped to treat both adult and children. The facility needs to modernize its Interventional Radiology Suite through the acquisition of new equipment, thus enabling physicians to perform radiological procedures with greater accuracy. 09.10.2009

The project will implement a Decision Support Tool (DST), which will assist policy-makers in the planning of drought-coping strategies for pastoralist societies in the Awash Basin, with a focus on optimizing allocation and management of pumping stations and the provision of price-weather insurance contracts. 23.11.2009
100,000 This grant will support the construction of a secondary school and hostel for homeless and impoverished children and youth in Tabora, Tanzania. Sponsored by FOSTER (Fransalian Organization for Social Transformation, Education and Renewal), the scheme will also insure that not only will beneficiary children be provided with a good-quality education, but also clothing, meals, medical care and shelter. The new facility will have the capacity to accommodate 600 pupils. 23.11.2009
15,000 This grant was extended to the University of Vienna, Austria to sponsor the translation of the Virtual Museum of Islamic Art website from German to English. This project will enable non-German speaking public internet users, as well as university libraries, journalists, museum staff and scholars, to benefit from the website. 23.11.2009
100,000 This grant is co-sponsoring the 8th General Conference of the Arab Thought Foundation entitled FIKR 8 Kuwait 2009, which will hold on December 9 – 10 in the State of Kuwait. The Conference bears the theme Integrating the Arab Economy Partners for Prosperity, and will bring together over 500 Arab and foreign leaders, businesspeople, scientists and researchers. 18.08.2009
50,000 This grant will help sponsor the IPI (International Press Institute) Business Journal Forum 2009, which will convene on November 12 – 13, 2009 in Baden, Austria. The Forum offers the opportunity for leading executives and journalists to a heavily-debated issue; namely, the relationship between businesses and the media. OFID’s contribution will specifically cover the costs of 30 journalists from least-developed countries to attend the Forum. 18.08.2009
100,000 This grant will support a scheme of Oxfam International, which aims at improving the living conditions and boosting food security among women in Senegal who are engaged in food processing/production. This will be achieved by providing financial and technical assistance to help them improve the quality and marketability of their produce as well as establishing local sales outlets, or kiosks. Some 2,500 rural women are expected to benefit from the project. 17.08.2009
100,000 This grant is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Conference of the Arab Fund for Environment and Development (AFED) which will be held under the theme The Impact of Climate Change on Arab Countries. The event will take place in Beirut, Lebanon, on November 19-20, 2009, and is expected to bring together over 500 top Arab and international delegates, including 30 Ministers of Energy and Environment. 17.08.2009
100,000 This grant will help finance a project of the Nyma e.V, a non-profit NGO that aims at helping improve the welfare of the Tibetian people. The scheme intends to strengthen Tibetian traditional medicine (TTM), which uses local plants to cure various illnesses. Activities include bolstering the use of TTM in health care settings and the education and training of stakeholder in using these treatments. In addition, income- generation activities will be promoted through the construction of greenhouses for cultivating medicinal plants and herbs. 17.08.2009
100,000 To help finance a program of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) that aims at improving the quality of education at the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblas, a remote mountainous region in Tajikistan. 17.06.2009

200,000 To help fund the production of a series of TV programs in Arabic covering scientific topics. The initiative is being sponsored by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), a major library and cultural center established in Alexandria, Egypt in 2002. The series will include 40 programs grouped into ten parts which will cover a wide range of scientific subjects. The programs will target a large regional and local audience in the Arab-speaking world, particularly students, young scientists, researchers and educators. 04.06.2009
200,000 To co-finance an outreach program Claim Intake Activities of Damages caused by the Separation Wall in Palestine, sponsored by the United Nations Register of National Damage Caused by the Construction of the Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (UNRoD). The program aims at insuring that all individuals who sustained material damage as a result of the separation wall in the West Bank are duly informed of their rights and be given the opportunity to file a legal claim. Temporary offices will be set up at various places in the West Bank and Gaza, each of which will be staffed by two claim intake teams. 04.06.2009
50,000 To support the Colombo Plan Secretariat's Professional Development Program for Sciences and Mathematics Educators (PDPSM), which will be held from July 29 - August 18 in Penang, Malaysia. 30,000 To sponsor the attendance of 25 students from developing countries at two conferences of the International Association for Energy Economics, which will be held this year in San Francisco, CA, USA and Vienna, Austria. 16.04.2009
100,000 To co-finance a pilot project of the Friends of Environment and Development Association (FEDA), that, since 1999, has rehabilitated and constructed important infrastructure in the Gamalia District in Cairo, Egypt. 100,000 To support the participation of 45 young scientists from Arab and developing countries at the 59th Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, which will hold at Lake Constance on June 28 - July 3, 2009. 100,000 To sponsor the Vienna City Marathon, which will be taking place on April 19. The grant will be divided equally between two prominent Austrian NGOs; namely, Doctors for the Disabled and the Society for Austro-Arab Relations in support of their activities in poverty-reduction in least-developed countries. Works to be carried out will include the upgrading of groundwater wells and irrigation systems, as well as the construction of water storage facilities. 2.5 million The grant will be distributed among 25 Palestinian NGOs that are providing vital assistance in the areas of education, health and agriculture, as well as social and community development. 3.5 million This grant will support an OFID/WHO Partnership on the Prevention of Transfusion-Transmitted HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Infections in Priority Countries. Activities will be carried out in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan contain the following components: assessing and developing national action plans for strengthening, and, where necessary, restructuring blood screening systems; upgrading of blood screening laboratory facilities and improvement of blood screening practices; and, implementation of blood screening quality assistance programs. 17.12.2009
3.5 million To co-finance an OFID/IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) partnership. IAVI sought OFID’s support to bolster its research and development program in Africa and India. The partnership will support original and unconventional research to advance the design and development of AIDS vaccines to halt the virus before initial infection, control HIV should an infection occur, slow the disease’s progression and limit viral transmission. 09.10.2009
