The OFID Annual Award for Development, 2008, has been presented to Professor Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director of the Grameen Bank, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Award, the third so far, was presented to Professor Yunus on the sidelines of the 29th Ministerial Council Session of OFID, held in Isfahan, IR Iran.

The Director-General of OFID, Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish, presented the Award in the presence of HE Dr. Ahmadi Nejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran; the Chairman of the Ministerial Council, H.E. Dr. Manouchehr Mottaki, and Chairman of the Governing Board, HE Mr. Jamal N. Lootah and other Members of the Council. The award was given “in recognition of his remarkable contribution to poverty alleviation in Bangladesh.” Mr. Al-Herbish praised the efforts of the Grameen Bank and its Managing Director, who he said, like OFID, was helping to improve living standards among the poor.

Accepting the Award, Prof Yunus thanked OFID for the “special recognition, especially that the poor around the world were being hit from two sides by the rising prices of food and energy.” He said that the poor were really distressed and that “their problems need to be fixed.” Prof Yunus said by recognising Grameen’s efforts at this point in time, OFID had showed that “it really has the poor around the world at heart.”

Instituted in 2006, the first Award was given to HUMANA People-to-People, an NGO based in Harare, Zimbabwe. The second Award in 2007 went to Austria-based NGO, SOS Children’s Villages.
